Dungeon Run
IMPORTANT
- Browser HTML5 version (ABOVE) has few glitches. TAB REFRESH helps.
- Windows download version (BELOW) is best.
- Other versions coming soon!
Inspiration
We're gamers.
We like games.
Wouldn't it be great if a game could produce an infinite amount of levels, with randomized stats, enemies, items, and tons of replayability? Well, that's the kind of game we wanted to create.
Also we were quite inspired by the rouge-like genre. Related games include: Spelunky, Binding of Isaac, Enter the Gungeon, etc.
How we built it
We used GameMaker Studio 2 as the framework and Piskle, a free online sprite editor, for the art and animation. Working together was easy because we are sisters :)
Challenges we ran into
Learning about source control ate up a lot of our time. Since we both programmed at the same time, we had to constantly merge our code between our computers. This was our first time using Git and Github to collaborate, so it was very confusing. Merge conflicts can be scary and tricky to resolve.
Working with our game engine’s entity path-finding logic was also a challenge. Even now the movements in our game are not as smooth as we would like them to be, but that's something for improvement.
Finally, most of our testing was carried out using the desktop version of the game so when we created the html5 version we did not have much time to test and tune it.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re impressed on how much we were able to create from scratch, in such limited time. Plus, we’re proud of our new found Git and GitHub skills(although obtained through a lot of mistakes).
What we learned
For the next hackathon we should come prepared with more ideas, because brainstorming was hard without a prompt. We learned about new design elements of rouge-likes, a kind of game we’ve never made before.
What's next for Dungeon Run?
We definitely want to add more randomized mechanics: abilities, weapons, character. More unique enemies. Add some clutter/decoration to fill up the dungeon. And, of course, fix up our movement, maybe add a dash feature. We had all these ideas during planning but didn’t have the time.
